The Galleria Shopping Centre brighten their appearance with Flux
GALLERIA SHOPPING CENTRE
The Galleria shopping centre is situated in Hatfield just off of the A1. It’s a modern shopping centre with over 80 shops inside. Owned by Land Securities, the largest commercial property in the UK and a member of the FTSE 100.
Tim Cootes, Technical Services Manager or The Galleria Shopping Centre contacted Energy Saving Lighting (ESL) to review their current lighting in their 5 level multi-story car park. ESL are the lighting consultancy partner of Flux LED Trade, only using our products for any project they carry out. Car parks and service corridors are some of the best area’s when it comes to energy savings and cutting down on current energy bills and carbon footprint for retail centres. In the case of the Galleria Shopping Centre their lights in both the 5 story car park and service area’s were on for over 16 hours per day where natural light was extremely limited.
They needed a solution that would provide a consistent lighting colour, brightness and a flicker free environment on all floors of the car park. Replacement lights with motion sensors and dimmable features were also needed to reduce lighting levels in the service corridors when these area’s were not in use.
The work needed to be completed in evenings over a week whilst the carpark and services area’s where not in use, out of shopping hours.
ESL are well established in providing diverse lighting solutions within the retail sector. Working closely with the centre’s technical service manager ESL changed all the existing 58W tube fittings to 22 LED tubes. The difference in colour was eliminated and with the 50,000 life expectancy maintenance reduced to a minimum.
In the service corridors the experienced ESL team observed the use of the environment and offered a dimmable LED lighting system to cut down wasted usage of lights and energy compared to the ‘always on’ existing lights. The installation of LED tubes with integrated sensors, which dim to 10% of their full light output after a set period of time, reduced energy consumption compared to conventional PIRs which switch off manually. The ambient light returns to full brightness only when movement is detected.
The results were almost instantaneous with a payback period of less than 1.65 years on the car park and 1.28 years on the service corridors. Energy savings of 62% will be saved on the car park and an outstanding 90% on the service corridors.
The Galleria Centre were absolutely delighted with the comprehensive solution and swift installation that the ESL team supplied.
Tim Cootes concludes “Average weekly readings since installation indicate a saving of £17,000 in the first year. The work was carried out over a week of nights and the ESL team conducted in a professional and efficient manner, booking in and out with our security team each night for a hassle free project. No mess and no tidy up afterwards. We would highly recommend using ESL’s services”.
No longer in the dark with cost saving LED lighting system
THE BENTALL CENTRE
Safety is paramount for the Bentall Centre for both shoppers and staff alike. Based in the busy town of Kingston they have a dedicated centre team working constantly to provide an efficient working environment behind the scenes to ensure the smooth running of all areas within the centre.
To cope with the constant demand of deliveries a network of service corridors run to the rear off all shops, with lifts delivering goods from the underground service road. These hidden away corridors have no natural light but needed to be lit for as long as the centre is open. There are long periods of time however where the corridors are not in use and even less activity on the evacuation staircases.
Energy consumption is always a big concern for Bob Ritchie, Centre Director, and it was his responsibility to find a solution that will considerably reduce energy bills whilst keeping maintenance costs to a minimum. “We had been looking at a number of different automatic lighting control systems including PIRs but were not convinced of the speed or range of response in our environment. We did a trial installation with the FLUX OVARA Dimming Tubes, which completely met all our requirements”.
The existing lighting consisted of 58watt florescent tubes with variable life expectancy causing them to be difficult and costly to maintain, especially with a ‘no more than 5’ broken bulb policy at all times.
ESL are well established in providing diverse lighting solutions within the retail sector. They are the lighting consultancy partners of FLUX LED Trade products. It was paramount to provide the Bentall Centre with a safe, good quality lighting solution that was energy saving with minimal maintenance.
Our experienced team observed the use of the environment and offered a dimmable LED lighting system to cut down wasted usage of lights and energy compared to the ‘always on’ existing florescent lights.
The FLUX OVARA LED Lamps offer a high, yet instant output but the dimmable functionality can be pre-set with a timer via a microwave sensor built into the lamps. If no movement is detected after 5 minutes within the allocated area, the lamps would dimmed down to a 10% output. The latest technology sensors inbuilt into the lamps offer movement detection from over 5 meters away, this movement triggers the lights to switch back to their full output.
Usage of this new LED lighting system cut the Bentall Centre lights in action time by over half from 11 hours to just 4 hours of the day, whilst offering a maximum lifespan of 50,000 and hours and 5 years warranty.
To drive down the cost of installation further, ESL provided the Bentall Centre with a retrofit solution using the existing light fittings and simply disconnected the old florescent tubes replacing with the new FLUX OVARA LED tubes.
The Bentall Centre were absolutely delighted with the comprehensive solution and swift installation that the ESL team supplied.
The results were almost instantaneous with a payback period of less than 18 months and potential savings in excess of 70%. The new lights were brighter at their full capacity and having an ambient light with the dimming tube gave reassurance for retail staff when entering the service corridors for safety.
So impressed with the reduced maintenance and energy costs the Bentall Centre have recently asked ESL to extend this successful system in further as a rolling project.
Bob Ritchie, Centre Director, concludes “We have now extended the use of integrated microwave technology in Phase 2 Service Roads and Loading Bays and the next step will probably be to extend the program throughout our car parks, where the potential savings are in excess of 70% after a payback period of less than 18 months”.

Lighting solutions are a smart choice with Shopping Centres
A better quality of light with ESL’s cost saving LED lighting system
Based in the centre of Royal Leamington’s Spa, Royal Priors is Leamington’s only indoor shopping centre. With its spacious malls, Royal Priors provides a relaxed shopping environment and an eclectic mix of big brand names, designer boutiques, independent stores and cafes.
Energy consumption is a big concern for Sarah Jones, Centre Operations Manager. It was her responsibility to find a solution that would improve the lighting quality and functionality within the service corridors and car park of the shopping centre; with additional pressure of considerably reducing current energy bills and maintenance costs within these designated area’s too.
To cope with the constant demand of deliveries a network of service corridors run to the rear off all shops. These hidden away corridors have no natural light but needed to be lit for as long as the centre is open. There are long periods of time however where the corridors are not in use and even less activity on the evacuation staircases.
The second part of the project was to look at the car park, the lighting for this area needed to be flicker and shadow free and low in maintenance offering customers a safe well lit environment to park their cars.
ESL are the lighting consultancy partner of FLUX LED Trade and are well established in providing diverse lighting solutions within the retail sector. It was paramount to provide theRoyalPriors shopping centre with a safe, good quality lighting solution that was energy saving with minimal maintenance. Our experienced team observed the use of the environment and offered a dimmable LED lighting system in the service corridors to cut down wasted usage of lights and energy compared to the ‘always on’ existing florescent lights.
To achieve this we installed the FLUX LED OVARA LED tubes with integrated microwave sensors which provide ambient light by dimming to 10% output when there is no activity in the immediate area. When movement is detected they instantly return to full brightness in the area where it is required. As a retrofit installation, retaining the existing fitting and negating the requirement for standalone sensors or alteration of existing cabling, it is also a highly cost effective solution.
In the car park the existing fittings were retained but the existing 1500mm tubes were replaced with the FLUX OVARA standard LED non-dimming tubes. They offer a clear, flicker free environment with a clear consistent lighting colour. The lights came with a 5 year warranty and over 50,000 hours of life expectancy to drive down maintenance costs.
The Royal Priors shopping centre were absolutely delighted with the comprehensive solution and swift installation that the ESL team supplied.
The results were almost instantaneous with a payback period of less than 24 months with 92% energy saving in the service corridors and the same payback period of 24 months and a further 69% energy saving in the car park.
